January CEO Blog - It's Cookie Time!

Ginny-Feature

It’s THAT time of year!  Girl Scout Cookie Time!!

When I meet new people and introduce them to Girl Scouts and our Council, one of my openings goes something like this….”you probably know the most famous Girl Scout program of all”…they reply “Cookies?”..and then I say “Yes – AND what you might not know is that the Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest financial education and empowerment program for girls in the country!”.  Cue surprised face….!

Those of us in the movement know that there's more to Girl Scout Cookies than what is in the box. Being part of the cookie sale teaches girls goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics – skills essential to leadership, to success, and to life. I have met countless women who were Girl Scouts and recall the cookie sale as one of the most impactful parts of their experience.  In addition, today, when I meet girls and ask them what do they like best about Girl Scouts, many enthusiastically reply “selling cookies!”

It's no wonder that 80% of women business owners were Girl Scouts in their youth. It’s those experiences in youth that imprint our capability to take risk, rebound from setback and keep going as adults.

GSUSA continues to build national partnerships with businesses who support our cookie booths during the sale.  This year we are thrilled to welcome JOANN's Fabric and another high-profile location (soon to be announced!) as partners.  Details about which locations are participating or how to connect with a local store are available from our Product Sales team!

I especially want to thank all the volunteers – especially the Troop and Service Unit Cookie Coordinators – for all you do to make the Cookie Program a success.  While the girls are having a blast, I know that it is a lot of work to support that learning and enthusiasm.  Your efforts are appreciated and your time is an investment in the future leaders and businesswomen our girls will become!
