American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Water Rescue (Inawendiwin) Comments
Prerequisite: Girl Scout membership
To determine what is required to take girls on the water, consult the Safety Activity Checkpoints.
There is a $10.00 charge for the complete course.
The American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue course provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to many types of aquatic emergencies. This course also prepares individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. The Basic Water Rescue course does not provide participants with all the knowledge and skills needed to be certified as a lifeguard.
Because there is an in-water skills session, it is recommended that participants are comfortable in chest deep-water. This course is designed to be taught in approximately 3 hours. This includes time for class activities, skills practice and the final written exam. Upon successful completion of the ARC Basic Water Rescue course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross Universal Certificate indicating Basic Water Rescue that is valid for 3 years.
To receive the course completion certificate, the participant must:
• Attend all class sessions
• Demonstrate competency in each skill taught in the course. (Competency is defined as being able to perform each skill correctly without coaching or assistance.)
• Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam (20 correct answers out of 25 questions).
Old sneakers or water shoes
A hat and sun screen
Water to drink
Girl Scouts who are 16 years or older may take this course. Same prerequisites apply.
Special Instructions: Park at the front gate (facing outwards). Meet in front of the Lodge by the gate and everyone will walk down to the lake together.
If the weather is questionable, the instructor will make a decision by 8:30 am that morning whether to hold the course the scheduled day or to use the rain date. Participants will be contacted via email. If it is determined that the course should be postponed the rain date will be June 15, 2014.
