Outdoor Courses

  • Several changes have been made to the Outdoor courses. Please read the descriptions carefully.
  • For safety, the Camp Trained volunteer and the First Aider must not be the same person.
  • Outdoor Training recertification has been suspended until further notice.  If you have taken Basic Outdoor Skills or BLT 3&4 at a legacy council: Overnight Adventures or Outdoor Skills are not required.

Overnight Adventures              3 hours
Prerequisites: Girl Scout membership, approved background check.
This course qualifies adult volunteers to take girls on overnight trips to museums/activity centers, lock-ins and hotels.  During this session we will discuss the following topics: the value of girls participating in outdoor activities, girl/adult partnership, planning & progression, characteristics of girl readiness, equipment appropriate for a simple overnight, required forms, create a kaper chart, safety measures and emergency procedures. 

Outdoor Skills (formerly known as I&2) Prep and Overnight
Prep 2 hours
Overnight 16 hours
Prerequisites: Girl Scout membership, approved background check, and Overnight Adventures
This course qualifies adult volunteers to take girls on campouts where the girls will be cooking outdoors, sleeping in cabins, yurts, platform tents or pitched tents.  During this session you will experience hands activities to learn how to:

  • Use a sketch map to locate their campsite
  • Read trail blazes
  • Prevent exposure to and remove deer ticks
  • List safety measures for bears, snakes
  • Use a jackknife
  • Tie these knots: square, clove hitch, bowline
  • Build, use and put out a fire
  • Make a foil (silver purse) snack/dinner
  • Wash, rinse and sanitize dishes
  • Dispose of waste water properly
  • Set up a clothesline for dunk bags
  • Perform a flag ceremony
  • Demonstrate the safe use of hatchets, saws
  • Select a good tent site
  • Pitch a tent
  • Make a box oven
  • Cook in a Dutch Oven
  • Use propane stoves
  • Use a vagabond stove
  • Plan and lead a Scout’s Own

Outdoor Skills is comprised of 2 sessions – Prep and Overnight. You must complete both sessions to certify as the Camp Trained volunteer. Please register for the Prep course that is paired with the appropriate outdoor component. Prep sessions are 2 hours. Overnight sessions are from 9 AM through 1 PM the following day.

This is a rain or shine activity. If there is a cancellation you will be notified by the Lead Trainer.
